From golfspain.com 10/01/02 - The Real Spanish Golf Federation has selected Marta Prieto, Tania El?segui and Nuria Clau to participate in the next Team World Championship, that will be competed in the Saujana Club, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), between October 16-19.
Marta Prieto and Tania El?segui have been the players who have accumulated more points in the Women's Absolute Ranking throughout the year thanks to their good results in different competitions - reason why they automatically made the Spanish team -, whereas the Technical Committee Feminine Amateur of the RFEG, through a "captain's choice" type of selection, has valued the quality of the Catalan Nuria Clau to complete the team, who for three years has been in the United States, at Wake Forest University, competing in golf and getting an education.
Spain will have as competition for title from more than 30 countries, which gives an idea of the enormous competition provoked in this competition. All the participating teams will face during four days by means of the stroke play, adding the better daily totals of two players to the results of each team.
In the last competition, contested in Germany in 2000, the Spanish team, formed for the occasion by Marta Prieto, Tania El?segui and Carmen Alonso, finished in fifth place, although the best memory goes back to 1992, in Canada, when Spain finished in first thanks to the sensational joint performance of Macarena Campomanes, Estefan'a Knuth and Laura Navarrese To the margin of this magnificent result, Spain finished in fourth in 1994 and 1996.
Palmar?s sport of the three selected players is filled with successes. In the case of Marta Prieto, it emphasizes the 1997 Spanish Championship, the prestigious 2001 British Ladies and, in collective competitions, the 2001 Games of the Mediterranean and the 1996 and 1998 European Junior Championships. This year the Sevillian player has prevailed in the Championship Iron Door, the Grand Prix of Chiberta and, the past weekend, in the Championship the International of Italy.
Tania El?segui, on the other hand, was the 2000 runner-up and champion of Spain and of Europe, contributing also to the triumphs in European Junior Team of 1998 and 2002, as well as in the 2001 Mediterranean Games.
Finally, the experience of Nuria Clau - champion of Spain in 1999- in the collective competitions became concrete in the successes harvested in European under-18 of 1997 and those of the Junior category (under-21) of 1998 and 2002.
