Winston-Salem, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team got its tenth consecutive win today, defeating the Appalachian State Mountaineers 10-1 at Kentner Stadium. With the victory, the Deacons improve to 12-2 (3-0 ACC), while the Mountaineers fall to 3-9 (0-3 NorPac). Wake Forest has now extended its home winning streak to 20 games.
The game was tight at the outset. After freshman Maeke Boreel scored off a feed from junior Katie Ackerman, Appalachian's Shannon Mayan evened things with an unassisted tally. The Deacons took over from there. Senior Heather Aughinbaugh recorded an unassisted goal in the 18th minute to put the Deacs ahead, 2-1. Freshman Kelly Wood added another goal just five minutes later. Freshman Ariel Meyers, making her first career start, scored off a pass from junior Kelly Doton to give the Deacons a 4-1 halftime lead.
The second half was more of the same, as Wake scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the half. Aughinbaugh got her second goal of the game in the 37th minute, and junior Lucy Shaw added another just over a minute later. Boreel continued the barrage, scoring off a feed from sophomore Claire Laubach. Later in the half, Shaw notched her second unassisted tally of the game, putting the Deacons in front, 8-1. Minutes later, Shaw ripped a shot from the top of the circle that was redirected into the net by junior Emily Ruth. Boreel capped off the win, getting her third goal of the game off a pass from Meyers. The hat trick was the second in a row by a Wake player, as Aughinbaugh scored three goals in Saturday's 6-1 win over Penn State.
"I thought we showed great execution," said Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill. "We had a little trouble getting started, but once we settled down, we started playing smarter instead of playing harder."
Wake Forest goalkeeper Katie Ridd did not need to make a single save, while Appalachian's tandem of Kate Ryno and Amy Sarno combined for 15 stops. The Deacons had 12 penalty corners, denying Appalachian State even one.
The Deacons have a full week's rest to prepare for their next contest, as they will play their last regular season home game. The North Carolina Tar Heels will travel to Kentner Stadium for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, October 20. That game will not count towards the ACC standings.
