
Cross Country Competes at NCAA Pre-National Invitational

The Wake Forest men and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Saturday in Terre Haute, IN. The women grabbed a second place finish out of 37 teams, while the men placed 27th out of 36.
Leading the way for the women was Anne Bersagel, who completed the 6,000m race in 20:35 for 11th place. Risa Rutland notched 24th with a time of 21:07. In 38th place was Erin Franklin with a time of 21:22. Jill Miller came in 41st place, with a time of 21:24. In 51st was Anna Sherman, who completed the race in 21:31. Danielle Coon and Nikeya Green also competed for the Demon Deacons.
Unofficially combining the two seeded races, the Demon Deacon women finished fourth overall, ahead of 12 teams ranked higher than Wake Forest. Among the higher-ranked teams that the Deacs ran past was perenial distance powerhouse, NC State, marking the first time Wake Forest had beaten the Wolfpack since 1993.
"It was a really big team effort today and we just had a solid performance," said Wake Forest women's coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. "I couldn't be prouder of our women. They had an opportunity to put themselves in a good position and they came through."
Mike Altieri was the top runner for the men, finishing in 70th place, with a time of 25:04. Sean Stevens completed the 8,000m race in 25:22 for 109th place. In 144th, was Andrew Ice, with a time of 25:40. Also competing for Wake Forest was Brandon Bartholomew (158th), Matt Busick (193rd) and Brian Smith (223rd).
Up next, the Demon Deacons will head to Atlanta on Nov. 2 to compete in the ACC Championships.
