Cambridge, Mass. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated the Harvard Crimson today, 3-2, at Harvard's Jordan Field, handing the Crimson just their second loss of the year. In getting their seventh consecutive win, the Demon Deacons improve to 8-2 (3-0 ACC), while Harvard falls to 6-2.
For the second consecutive game, Wake Forest was forced to come from behind. Eleven minutes into the game, Harvard's Kate McDavitt converted a rebound off a penalty corner to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, though, Wake Forest junior midfielder Kelly Doton scored the unassisted equalizer following a corner. With less than three minutes remaining in the half, Doton was in on the action again, this time feeding freshman Maeke Boreel, who fired it past Harvard goalie Katie Zacarian to put the Deacs on top, 2-1.
The teams played more than 25 minutes of scoreless hockey in the second half before the Deacons got on the board again. On a penalty corner, senior Heather Aughinbaugh pushed the ball out to classmate Maria Whitehead, who stopped it for junior back Lucy Shaw. Shaw pounded the ball into the back of the net for a 3-1 lead. Harvard battled back, though, as McDavitt found another rebound with 1:07 remaining to cut the lead to 3-2, but Wake Forest was able to keep the Crimson from threatening in the final minute to clinch the victory.
Wake Forest junior goalkeeper and reigning ACC Player of the Week Katie Ridd made seven saves in the win, while Zacarian had 10 stops. Wake Forest outshot Harvard by a 16-14 margin and had 13 penalty corners to Harvard's nine.
Wake Forest will remain at Harvard to play the UMass Minutewomen on Sunday at 1 p.m.
