WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Three highly-rated prep golfers will join the Wake Forest men's program in the 2003-04 season, as announced by WFU head coach Jerry Haas. Matt McLean, of Miami, Fla., Sean Moore of Marshville, N.C. and Chad Wilcox of Peoria, Ariz. all signed national letters-of-intent during the early signing period, which began last week.
"I'm very pleased with how our recruiting went this fall," said Coach Haas. "We signed three very solid students who are also solid young men and golfers."
McLean, who is the son of nationally-renowned golf instructor Jim McLean, has ranked as high as 46th in the U.S. junior rankings.
Wilcox is a tournament champion on the AJGA national circuit, having won the 2002 AJGA Spokane Open. A two-time high school state champion in Arizona, Wilcox was also was the runner-up in the Arizona Amateur. He's been listed as high as 39th in the national rankings.
Moore, who elected to stay in his home state, is a two-time high school state champion in North Carolina. Moore is also the North Carolina Junior Match Play Champion as well as the Carolinas Junior Champion (covering both North and South Carolina.). Moore has reached as high as 11th in the national rankings.
"The three of them together will be a tremendous addition to the team," Haas said. "When I look at what we're losing in the senior class of Cortland Lowe, Brent Wanner, Chad Wilfong and Chris Yoder, these young men are certainly on track to be just as good or even better."
The Wake Forest men's golf team finished the fall season ranked third nationally with a veteran, senior-laden squad. The Deacs return to action with their spring tournament schedule beginning in February.
