DALLAS (SMU) - The Wake Forest women's basketball team came up short in the championship game of SMU's Hoops for the Cure Classic, falling to the host Mustangs on Saturday evening at SMU's Moody Coliseum. With the score tied at 69 at the end of regulation, SMU rattled off 14 straight points in overtime to earn their own tournament title. The loss drops Wake to 1-1 on the season.
The Deacs built a 12-point lead in the first half, but the Mustangs scored six straight to end the period to make the score 38-32 in Wake's favor at the break. SMU kept up that momentum in the second half, outscoring Wake 12-2 and leading 44-40 at the 14:04. Wake then tied it at 44, and from there until the end of regulation, neither team led by more than four points. The Deacons held a 67-66 lead with 24 seconds left when Bianca Brown was fouled. She made both free throws on the one-and-one, and Wake led 69-66. Seven seconds later, SMU's Shanta Ramdhanny made her only three-pointer of the night to tie the score. Wake freshman Cotelia Bond-Young couldn't convert on a layup in traffic in the closing seconds, sending the game into OT.
SMU scored two straight three-pointers to take a six-point lead, 75-69, and never looked back. The Mustangs scored 14 unanswered points before WFU's Heather Miller made a layup with three seconds remaining to make the final score 83-71.
Wake Forest junior Eafton Hill was named to the Hoops for the Cure Classic All-Tournament team after posting her second double-double in as many days. She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds against the Mustangs, averaging 23.0 points and 12.0 rebounds for the tournament.
Wake guards Tonia Brown and Bianca Brown also posted double-figures in the championship game. Tonia contributed 15 to go with seven rebounds, while Bianca, playing 41 minutes, added 12 points.
Wake Forest returns home to host Marshall on Tuesday, Nov. 26. It is the home opener for the Demon Deacons, with tipoff set at 7:00 p.m. at Joel Coliseum.
