Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest field hockey coach Jennifer Averill has announced that two freshmen will be joining the Wake Forest team in the fall. Ariel Meyers and Kelly Wood have signed with the Deacons and will begin competing in the fall. Both players will graduate from Warwick High School in Lititz, Pa. in June.
Ariel Meyers, a 5-4 forward from Lititz, Pa., will add more speed to an already lightning-quick Demon Deacon squad, as she has been clocked at 5.05 in the 40-yard dash. Also in 2001, she was named a National Coaches Association Scholar All-American in soccer.
Kelly Wood, a 5-6 forward, also attended Lititz's Warwick High School. Her quick hands and ball-handling ability should another weapon to the Deacon offense. In 1999, Wood was a member of the Under-16 National Team and played for Warwick's Pennsylvania AAA State Championship squad, being named a AAA State First Team All-Star. Also in 1999, she was a Mid-East Regional All-American and a 2nd Team National All-American. In 2000, Wood was named as an alternate to the Under-19 National Team. Her U-16 National Team earned a bronze medal at the Holland Tournament. Warwick again won the AAA State Championship and Wood was a 1st Team National All-American and attended A-Camp. In her senior season of 2001, Wood was co-captain of Warwick's squad and was named to the Under-18 National Team.
The Deacons finished last season at 16-5, making the National Semifinals for the second consecutive year.
