Winston-Salem, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated 34th-ranked Illinois this afternoon, 5-2 at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Deacons move to 5-1 on the season, while Illinois falls to 5-2.
The Deacons easily earned the doubles point, with the number three team in the nation of junior Bea Bielik and senior Janet Bergman winning, 8-2 over Cynthya Goulet and Jennifer McGaffigan. Freshmen Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz defeated Michelle Webb and Kate Boomershine, 8-0, and freshman Karin Coetzee and sophomore Aimee Smith topped Eva Choe and Tiffany Eklov, 8-4.
Bielik, coming off a strained bicep, did not play singles, so Bergman was forced into the number-one spot, where she fell to McGaffigan, 6-4, 6-2. At number two, senior Maren Haus defeated Goulet, 6-2, 6-3. Martzolf beat Eklov, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 at number three, running her record to 6-0 on the season, and Schwartz topped Choe, 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth slot. Smith defeated Boomershine, 6-2, 6-3 and sophomore Liz Proctor fell to Eldina Fazlic, 7-6, 6-4.
Wake Forest head coach Brian Fleishman was proud of the way his team handled the lineup change. "Everyone stepped up and held up their end of the bargain," Fleishman said. "Sometimes that's difficult when you pull your number one player out of the lineup, but our girls handled that very well."
The Deacons return to action on February 21st when they welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies to Winston-Salem. That match will begin at 4 p.m.
