Winston-Salem, N.C. - Behind a brilliant performance by junior Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.), the 14th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team rallied to a 4-3 win over the 6th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday in the first match of the 2002 season. With the win, the Deacs start the season 1-0, while the Volunteers drop to 2-1.
Wake took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The duo of Bielik and senior Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.), ranked third nationally, defeated Crystal Cleveland and Alison Ojeda, 8-5. At No. 2, Maren Haus (Brielle, N.J.) and Aimee Smith (Norcross, Ga.) were defeated by Vilmarie Castellvi and Agnes Wiski, 8-6. At No. 3, Katie Martzolf (Indianapolis, In.) and Danielle Schwartz (Livingston, N.J.) defeated Brooke Cordell and Majen Immink, 8-5.
The Deacons and Vols then split the singles matches, 3-3. In the No. 1 spot, Bielik, ranked first nationally, defeated Ojeda, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Bergman fell to Castellvi, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. In the third spot, Haus was defeated by Wiski, 6-3, 6-1. Martzolf got past Immink in the fourth slot at 7-6, 6-2. At No. 5, Smith fell to Cleveland, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, while Schwartz defeated Ashley Robards, 6-4, 7-6 in the sixth slot.
Wake Forest head coach Brian Fleishman was excited about the victory. "We competed well in all spots," said Fleishman. "That's a great, positive way to start off the season, with all the girls competing well."
The Deacons will be back in action on Sunday at noon when they welcome the 72nd-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd to the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
