Women's Tennis Shuts Out Virginia Tech, 7-0

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team, ranked sixth nationally, improved to 6-1 in the 2002 spring season with a 7-0 shutout of Virginia Tech on Thursday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center. Virginia Tech, ranked 75th, fell to 6-3 on the year.
The Demon Deacons took the doubles point by winning all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the nation's third-ranked tandem of Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman won 8-2 over Virginia Tech's Felice Lam and Kristen Stubbs. Wake's freshman duo of Danielle Schwartz and Katie Martzolf, playing No. 2 doubles, held off Carolyn Kramer and Ines Khelifi, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith teamed up to defeat Ashleigh Sarver and Meredith Vincent, 8-4.
Wake Forest won five of six singles matches in straight sets. Bielik, the nation's top-ranked player, made quick work of Stubbs, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Bergman held off Vincent, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 while Martzolf defeated Khelifi 6-2, 6-3 at the third position to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Wake senior Maren Haus defeated Virginia Tech's Ginger Lowdermilk, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. At No. 5 singles, Wake's Smith rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Zdenka Videnova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Coetzee completed the Deacon shutout with one of her own, blanking Lam, 6-0, 6-0.
"To be 6-1 and ranked No. 6 at this point of the season is a huge accomplishment," said Wake Forest head coach Brian Fleishman. "Today was a great warm-up for facing a top 20 team. We worked on our concentration, our focus, and we should be in a good situation when we play at William & Mary."
The Deacons travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on the 19th-ranked Tribe on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
