Winston-Salem, N.C. - The 12th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 6-1 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday at Hooks Stadium.
Freshman Tim Morley turned in an outstanding pitching performance to pick up his first career win. He struck out nine batters in seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits.
Wake Forest (6-1) got the majority of its productivity from the top of the order. The top five hitters in the order accounted for eight of the team's nine hits. Jamie D'Antona had two hits and drove in two runs. Ryan Hubbard was also a major factor in the game, reaching base three times and stealing three bases.
Hubbard's base-running helped the Deacons claim the lead in the fifth inning. Trailing 1-0, Hubbard reached on a one-out walk. He proceeded to steal second and third base before D'Antona singled him home to tie the game. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, pinch-hitter Stephen Ghutzman was hit by pitch. Nick Blue scored giving Wake Forest a lead they would not relinquish.
Seth Hill and Dave Bush combined for two innings of no-hit relief to close the door on the Bearcats (4-4).
The two teams will get together on Sunday afternoon for the series finale. Senior Brad Comer gets the ball for the Demon Deacons. First pitch is 1:30 p.m.
