WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The 14th-ranked Demon Deacon women's tennis team marched past 71st-ranked Marshall 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Deacs improve to 2-0 on the season while Marshall slipped to 0-3.
Wake Forest got off to a fast start by easily winning all three doubles matches, highlighted by a convincing 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot by Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman. The nation's third-ranked duo defeated Anna Mitina and Alice Sukner. Maren Haus and Aimee Smith won at the No. 2 position 8-2 over Jessica Johnson and Danielle Hock. Finally, at the No. 3 spot, Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz defeated Ashley Kroh and Megan Skalsky 8-3.
"We really took it to them in all three doubles matches and that really set the tone. All three of our teams looked better than they did yesterday which was a huge plus. The doubles point is such a momentum builder," head coach Brian Fleishman said. "In singles, everyone came out and took care of their own court."
The Deacons won five of the six singles matches. Four of those victories came in straight sets, including one by Bielik, the nation's top-ranked singles player. She hammered out a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jessica Johnson. Martzolf, Schwartz and Proctor also picked up straight set victories.
Marshall's only point of the afternoon came at the No. 3 position where Alice Sukner upset 67th-ranked Maren Haus.
The Demon Deacons return to action this week at the National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisc. That event begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.
