Women's Tennis Downed By #1 Stanford, 5-2

MADISON, WI -- The 14th-ranked Demon Deacon women's tennis team was handed its first defeat of the season Friday night, a 5-2 loss to top-ranked Stanford at the National Team Indoors tournament in Madison, Wisc.
Wake Forest's Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman, the nation's third-ranked doubles team, successfully defended their ranking with an 8-5 over Stanford's number one team of Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette., the sixth-ranked duo in the country. Stanford, however, won the two other matches to earn the doubles point.
The singles matches were hotly contested as four of the matches went to three sets. At the top spot, junior Bea Bielik rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over 11th-ranked Gabriela Lastra. Wake Forest freshman Katie Martzolf upset 52nd-ranked Keiko Tokuda in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-3.
Wake Forest falls to 3-1 on the season and will play Tennesee in Saturday afternoon's consolation bracket.
