Women's Tennis Defeats UC Santa Barbara, 6-1

Las Vegas, NV - LAS VEGAS - The 6th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-1, advancing in the inaugural UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Wake Forest swept the doubles competition to earn the team point and won five of six of the singles matches to seal the victory.
The Deacons dominated singles play as Maren Haus (Sr., Brielle, NJ) defeated Cindy Ammann in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Aimee Smith (So., Norcross, Ga.) took the No.3 singles match, taking straight sets from Chelsea Dillon, 6-4, 6-1. Danielle Schwartz (Fr., Livingston, NJ) made quick work of Michelle Stewart, winning the No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Wrapping up the victory for the Deacs, Elizabeth Proctor (So., Myrtle Beach, SC) defeated Shiho Fukushima, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 5 singles while Karin Coetzee (Fr., Bloemfontein, South Africa) shut out Myriah Fitzgibbon in No. 6 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Wake Forest's Martzolf and Schwartz made away with the No. 1 doubles victory over Stewart and Dillon, 8-6. Securing the team point, Coetzee and Haus rolled over Amman and Khan in the No. 2 doubles, 8-0 and Smith and Proctor took the No. 3 singles, defeating Fukushima and Amanda Pazornik, 8-6.
Despite resting its top two singles players, Wake Forest improved to 8-1 on the year with a 6-1 win over unranked UC Santa Barbara.
The Demon Deacons will face No. 49 Tulsa (7-2) in one of Saturday's semifinals (2 p.m. PST) after the Golden Hurricane got by 67th-ranked New Mexico 5-2.
