New Orleans, La. -- Ryan Hubbard's two-out, eighth inning single scored Ryder Mathias to break a 5-5 tie and proved to be the game-winning RBI as the 10th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team defeated the University of New Orleans, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon in New Orleans.
The Privateers threatened late with the tying run in scoring position in the eighth and again in the ninth. In the eighth, with the infield in, reliever Adam Hanson got UNO's Chris Adams to line into a inning-ending double play. Hanson got the win to improve to 3-0 on the season, dropping his season ERA to 0.56. Dave Bush got the save for the second straight day, his fourth of the year.
After four innings, the Privateers led 5-1 and knocked Wake Forest starter Seth Hill out of the game. Hill, making his first start as a Deacon, pitched 5.2 innings and gave up five runs, all earned.
Wake Forest wasted no time in pulling even, putting four runs up in the fifth inning. Ryan Hubbard led off with a home run. After an RBI double by Jamie D'Antona, Steve LeFaivre blasted the first pitch he saw over the right field fence, tying the game at five.
After that, the Deacon bullpen took over. Freshman Brian Bach tossed 2.1 innings of perfect relief. Hanson came on in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings before Bush closed the door in the ninth.
The Deacons and Privateers will wrap up their series on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field. Tim Morley will pitch for Wake Forest.
