CHARLESTON, S.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons recorded a shutout over the College of Charleston, defeating the Cougars 6-0 in women's tennis action at the Silcox Tennis Courts at the F. Mitchell Johnson Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The win marked Wake Forest's second shutout of the season and improved its season record to 12-1.
Due to a rain delay, the teams skipped doubles play and went straight to singles. All six Demon Deacons were successful in straight sets. The nation's top-ranked player, Bea Bielik, defeated Charleston's Gabriella Moreira, 6-4, 6-1 in the number one slot, while 19th-ranked Janet Bergman survived Charleston's Rachel Magory, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2. Wake freshman Katie Martzolf, ranked 56th nationally, defeated Marcella Valkenhoff 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3. At the No. 4 slot, Cougar Maike Hartung fell to Deacon senior Maren Haus, 6-4, 6-3. Rounding out the Deacon effort was freshman Danielle Schwartz, who defeated Whitney Malina at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4, and sophomore Aimee Smith, who topped Renata Camargo at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Wake Forest returns home to host seventh-ranked Texas in a battle of top-10 teams on Friday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m. The match is scheduled to take place at Leighton Tennis Stadium. In the event of inclement weather, the match will move to the Indoor Tennis Center.
