Women's Tennis Advances to Finals of UNLV Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team continued play in the UNLV Spring Invitational on Saturday, defeating No. 49 Tulsa 5-2 in a semifinal match. Wake's victory sets up a championship showdown with the host Rebels, ranked 53rd nationally, on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons defeated Tulsa despite dropping the doubles point to start the match. At No. 1 doubles, the nation's No. 1 tandem of Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman won 8-4 over Tulsa's 57th-ranked Alicia Pillay and Jana Sedivec. The Golden Hurricanes posted wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, however, to take the point.
Wake Forest bounced back in singles, winning five of six matches for the team victory. At No. 1, Bielik, the nation's top-ranked singles player, easily handled Tulsa's 53rd-ranked Aleksandra Durska, 6-1, 6-1. Bergman rallied from a second-set loss to defeat Pillay, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 2. Freshman Katie Martzolf (No. 2), senior Maren Haus (No. 3) and freshman Karin Coetzee (No. 6) all posted straight-set victories for the Demon Deacons.
Tulsa's lone singles win came at No. 5 singles, where Gabriela Zingman defeated Wake's Aimee Smith, 6-1, 6-1.
Wake Forest improves to 9-1 on the season and has won six straight matches. The Deacs will face UNLV in the championship on Sunday at 12 noon (EST) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Lady Rebels upset 40th-ranekd South Alabama on Saturday to advance to the finals.
