Winston-Salem, N.C. - The 8th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team battled back from deficits twice and defeated NC State 8-6 on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field in Raleigh. The Deacons improved to 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and snapped a two-game losing streak.
Wake Forest trailed 6-5 after seven innings but picked up two runs in the eighth, taking the lead on Nick Blue's sacrifice fly. In the ninth, Ben Ingold added an insurance run with an RBI single to cap a 4-for-5 day at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Daniel Davidson (3-0) picked up the win in relief of Tim Morley. Davidson retired all four batters he faced before turning it over to Dave Bush who earned his fifth save of the season.
In the eighth inning, down a run, the Deacons got four straight singles, including a pair of bunt singles. Adam Bourassa's single to center evened the game at six. Blue followed with a sacrifice fly to give Wake Forest a 7-6 lead.
Trailing 5-3, the Deacons scored two in the fifth to tie. With the bases loaded and two out, Ben Ingold's line drive went off the foot of Wolfpack starter Michael Rogers and deflected toward home plate. Rogers' only play was at the plate but his throw was errant, allowing two runs to score.
Wake Forest drew first blood in the second inning as five straight singles led to three Deacon runs, highlighted by Ryan Johnson's two-run single through the right side.
The Wolfpack came storming back in the third with a five-spot. NC State batted around in the inning and the big blow was Colt Morton's three-run blast just inside the left field foul pole.
The Deacons and the Wolfpack will conclude their weekend series on Sunday at Doak Field. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
