Women's Tennis Defeats No. 58 Michigan, 6-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team, ranked third nationally, improved to 17-2 on the season with a 6-1 victory over 58th-ranked Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's match marked the fourth meeting between the Wolverines and the Demon Deacons, as Wake Forest has won all four in the series.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 1-0 lead after doubles after sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the team point. At No. 1, the nation's top-ranked tandem of Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik posted an 8-1 win over Michelle DaCosta and Leanne Rutherford, 8-1. Wake's Aimee Smith and Karin Coetzee held off Michigan's Kim Plaushines and Jen Vaughn, 8-6, while Deacon freshman Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz won 8-3 at No.3 over Christine Nolan and Kavitha Tipirneni.
The Demon Deacons then took five of six singles matches for the 6-1 victory. Bielik, who is also ranked No. 1 nationally in singles, won 6-2, 6-1 over Tippernini. Bergman, ranked 17th, posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over DaCosta at No. 2 singles.
Wake's three freshmen, playing at the Nos. 4-6 spots in the lineup, performed well against the Wolverines. At No. 4, Coetzee improved her individual record to 10-2 this spring with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Rutherford. Katie Martzolf won 6-3, 7-5 over Plushines at No. 5 and Schwartz posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Joanne Musgrove.
Wake Forest returns to action with an ACC match on Wednesday, April 4 when it travels to North Carolina for a 5:00 p.m. matchup with the Tar Heels.
