Women's Golf Advances To NCAA Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Wake Forest women's golf team shot its lowest team tournament score (875) in WFU history to finish in third place, securing a berth in the NCAA National Championships in Auburn, Wash. May 21-24. The other seven teams that will represent the East Region include: Duke, Auburn, Florida, Southern Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Vanderbilt.
This is the seventh NCAA Championship berth in WFU history, all under the tutelage of Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "We are really excited about qualifying," said Dailey. "This is the best three-day score in a tournament for Wake Forest. We hope to use this momentum and confidence gained to our advantage. I'm very proud of our players. The pressure never got to them."
Junior Nuria Clau finished in a five-way tie for 13th place after shooting two- over par in the final round. Senior Katie Brenny turned out her second best finish of the season of a tie for 18th place. Her three-day tournament score of 220 is a career best.
"This was Katie's career best tournament," said Dailey. "She started off slow but used great course management skills to pull through."
Junior Maria Beautell shot her final round even par 72 to jump to a seven-way tie for 20th place. This was Beautell's third round this season to shoot under or even par. Beautell posted her season best tournament score of 221.
Freshman Ashley Hoagland finished in the tie for 20th place as well. Hoagland shot her first career even par 72 score to finish five-over par for the tournament. Sophomore Deb Means rounds out the Deacon five in a tie for 41st place. Despite only shooting four-over par in the final round, Means dropped several spots from her tie for 29th place standing yesterday. Means did tie her best 54-hole spring score of 224.
The Deacons travel to Auburn, Wash. May 21-24 along with the top eight competitors from the East, West and Central Regions. The championships are hosted by the University of Washington and will be played at the Washington National Golf Club, which boasts 6,283 yards and a par 72 course.
