Men's Golf Finishes 11th At Carpet Capital Collegiate

ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The Wake Forest men??s golf team shot an two-over 290 on Sunday but dropped one spot in the standings to finish 11th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, taking place at The Farm, a par-72 course.

Wake Forest finished the 54-hole event with a 10-over par 874, 24 strokes back of team champion Clemson,who won with a 14-under 850. Eighteen teams competed in the 2002 event.

For the second straight event, Wake Forest junior Bill Haas claimed individual co-champion honors. Haas and Georgia Tech??s Troy Matteson were tied at eight-under heading into Sunday??s final round, and both turned in 69s on the final 18 to finish the event in first place with an 11-under 205. It was the second-best 54-hole score for Haas in his career, as he recorded a 13-under 203 last season.

Senior Brent Wanner finished the tournament on an upswing, carding a one-under 71 in the final round. He finished 48th overall with a six-over 222 for the tournament (77-74-71). Senior Cortland Lowe, who started off strong with a first-round 71, posted a pair of 77s over the final 36 holes and placed 61st with a nine-over 225. Teammate Chad Wilfong also finished 61st after a final round 73 bumped him up nine spots in the standings. Senior Chris Yoder struggled in the final round, shooting an 81 on Sunday and finishing 80th with a 16-over 232.

The Demon Deacons return to action Oct. 7-8, competing in The Ping Preview at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Karsten Creek is the site of the 2003 NCAA Championships.
