The Omni Hotels Collegiate Women's Tennis Rankings were released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Monday and two Wake Forest players were among the top 125 singles players in the nation. Sophomores Karin Coetzee and Katie Martzolf were rewarded for their success in the fall by being ranked 62nd and 70th respectively.
Sixty-one players from teams that 15th-ranked Wake Forest will face this season are ranked, plus 28 doubles pairs on opponent teams.
Coetzee cracks the national rankings after putting together an 11-1 singles record this fall, emerging as the team's number one player. Winning her singles flight at the William & Mary Invitational with four straight set victories, Coetzee then won the top singles flight at the Deacon Classic with four straight set victories, including upsets over then-ranked No. 92 Jen Tuchband from Virginia and Wake Forest teammate, then-ranked No. 75, Martzolf. Coetzee is ranked 15th in the region in singles and 14th in doubles with her partner Aimee Smith. The Demon Deacon duo went 5-5 in the fall and upset the then-ranked No. 29 team, Michaela Havelkova and Valerie Vladea from Minnesota.
Martzolf moves up in the national rankings from 75th to 70th after winning seven of 10 singles matches this fall. A finalist in both singles and doubles at the Deacon Classic, Martzolf advanced to the Round of 16 in both singles and doubles at the Southeast Region Championships. As a rookie, Martzolf compiled a singles record of 28-9 and cracked the national singles rankings this time last year, reaching as high as 48th midway through the spring. She is currently ranked 17th in the regional singles rankings and 15th in doubles with her partner Danielle Schwartz.
