Box Score

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The Wake Forest volleyball team saw its record fall to 4-3 in the ACC and 14-5 overall after a 3-1 loss at North Carolina on Thursday evening in Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels improved to 5-2 and 14-6 after the victory. With Jessica Hauff, Morgan Havig and Natasha Schaefer all sidelined with injuries, the Demon Deacons were led by Valerie Rydberg who recorded her eighth straight double-double. Rydberg had 15 kills and 13 assists in a losing effort for Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons fell behind 2-1 to start game one, but rallied behind kills by Erin Borhart and Lauren Peterson to take a 10-6 lead at the first timeout. After trading points, two blocks by the Tar Heels made the score 14-11. The teams continued to trade points for most of the game, but with the score 26-25 in favor of Wake Forest, Kim Stern went rolling off the court to come up with a tremendous dig and Rydberg put away the kill to give Wake Forest the momentum. A few plays later, Rydberg and Peterson combined for block on game point as the Deacs took game one, 30-27.

Three UNC kills and two Wake Forest errors put the Demon Deacons in a 0-5 hole to start the second game. The Tar Heels continued to dominate and took a 12-4 lead early on thanks in part to five Wake Forest attack and service errors. The Deacs mounted a small comeback thanks to kills by Stern, Borhart and Rydberg and pulled within 18-12. The Demon Deacons continued to play well, but Wake Forest was not able to overcome its seven service errors in the game as North Carolina took game two 30-27 and evened the score at one.

In game three, Wake Forest hit just -.024 as a team while the Tar Heels recorded 12 kills and three service aces to win the game 30-23 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Facing elimination in the fourth game, the Demon Deacons were not able to stop North Carolina's momentum. The Tar Heels continued to roll, finishing off Wake Forest with a dominant 30-17 performance in game four.

The Demon Deacons return to action Friday night when they travel to Raleigh to take on the Wolfpack of NC State at 7:00 p.m.
