Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The Wake Forest volleyball team suffered its second loss to Maryland in as many meetings this season, falling to 15-6 overall and 5-4 in the ACC. The Terrapins came into Reynolds Gymnasium on Tuesday evening in second place in the ACC and dropped the Demon Deacons in four games, improving to 19-4 and 8-1.

The Deacs hit just .174 as a team but were led by Christy Williams who contributed with 14 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. Kim Stern, Valerie Rydberg and Erin Borhart each had double-doubles for the Deacs in a losing effort. Maryland's Stephanie Smith led all players with 17 kills, a .500 attack percentage and seven total blocks.

Maryland wasted no time getting on the board with a 30-20 victory in game one. The Terrapins hit .333 as a team compared to Wake Forest's mark of .026. The Demon Deacons came back stronger in game two and fought the Terps hard, but Maryland edged Wake Forest 30-25 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Demon Deacons appeared re-energized in game three, rolling to a 30-17 win. Maryland never led in the game as six different Wake Forest players recorded kills. The Deacs went on several runs including a five point streak during the serve of Williams late in the game. Wake Forest hit .390 in the third game, and head coach Valorie Baker liked what she saw.

"I think we played to our ability in the third game, and as a result, the score ended up the way it did. Unfortunately we were not able to maintain that level of play in game four," said Baker.

Maryland came storming right back in the fourth game. The Deacs had built a two point lead at 13-11, but the Terrapins scored eight points in a row and never looked back, taking the game 30-24 and winning the match.

The Demon Deacons return to action Saturday evening at 6 p.m. when they host the Florida State Seminoles in Reynolds Gymnasium.
