Winston-Salem, NC - The #1 Wake Forest field hockey team looks to secure a regular season ACC Championship this Sunday when they host the University of Virginia Cavaliers. The Deacons have defeated each of their ACC opponents in games this season, and would advance to a 4-0 record in the ACC with a win over Virginia on Sunday.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association ranked Wake Forest as the number one team in the country for the seventh week in a row this season. The Cavaliers are currently tied at #20 with The University of California - Berkeley. The Deacs are 13-1 on the season, 3-0 in the ACC. Virginia is 9-7 overall, 0-2 in ACC matches.
Virginia leads the series record 15-6, but has not beaten the Deacs in the last five contests. The Deacs last fell to the Cavaliers, 1-0, on November 6, 1998 in ACC Tournament action. Virginia most recently defeated Wake Forest on Demon Deacon turf on October 25, 1997.
Sunday's game is the last regular season home match for the Deacs. Seniors Kelly Doton, Katie Ridd, Katie Ackerman, Lucy Shaw, and Emily Ruth will be acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the Wake Forest field hockey program in their four years as Demon Deacons.
Action is set to begin at 1:00 pm in Kentner Stadium.
