Kelly Doton and Josh Howard, the ACC Player of the Year in their respective sports last season, were selected to receive the Marge Crisp Award (Wake Forest's female athlete of the year) and the Arnold Palmer Award (WFU's male athlete of the year) for the 2002-03 academic year.
Doton, currently a senior on the Deacon field hockey team, helped lead Wake Forest to the 2002 NCAA championship - the first national title ever won by a WFU women's team. A two-time All-ACC selection and a 2002 first team All-American, Doton ranked 14th nationally last year in assists per game and she made the NCAA All-Tournament team for the third consecutive year. Doton is hoping to lead Wake Forest to a fourth consecutive Final Four appearance this fall.
Howard, now a reserve guard with the Dallas Mavericks, was the first unanimous ACC Player of the Year since NC State's David Thompson in 1975. Wake's first All-American since Tim Duncan in 1997, Howard led the ACC in scoring and offensive rebounds last season. Howard and Duke's Shane Battier are the only players in ACC history to accumulate 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, 200 steals, 100 blocked shots and 100 three-point field goals. Howard, a first-round NBA Draft pick, led Wake Forest to its first outright ACC regular season title since 1962.
