Women's Golf Places Fifth at Franklin St. Partners Invite

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest women??s golf team placed fifth out of nine teams at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational this weekend. The Demon Deacons, who were tied for fifth going into Sunday??s final round, remained in that position with a 17-over score of 305 on the last 18 holes.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament took place at Finley Golf Course on a par 72, 6,285-yard layout.
Duke captured team champion honors with a 14-under 850, finishing 49 strokes better than second-place Florida. The Deacs finished the event with a 46-over 910, just four strokes back of Tennessee and Auburn, who tied for third at 42-over.
Wake Forest senior Deborah Means finished in a four-way tie for 11th, the best finish by a Deacon in a team event so far this season. Means shot 73-76-76 to end up at nine-over 225 for the tournament. She finished 16 strokes back of Duke??s Leigh Anne Hardin and Liz Janangelo, who tied for first with a seven-under 209. They were the only players to finish under par for the tournament.
Junior Ashley Hoagland tied for 17th at 11-over par 227 (76-78-73). Hoagland??s one-over 73 on Sunday was the Deacs?? best round of the day. Junior Christine Hallstrom placed one stroke back of Hoagland in 19th place with a 12-over 228 (73-77-78). Freshman Mandy Goins posted her second-straight top 25 finish, tying for 24th at 15-over 231 (77-76-78).
Freshman Jessica Castle withdrew from Sunday??s round after posting scores of 76-80 through the first 36 holes.
The Wake Forest women??s golf team returns to action in three weeks, competing in the ACC/SEC Challenge in Destin, Fla., Oct. 24-26.
