Three-time defending champion Duke recorded an opening round 289, and leads by five shots after the first day of play at the Seventh Annual Bryan National Collegiate. The tournament is being held at the par 72, 6074-yard Bryan Park Champions Course.
The tournament is co-hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Wake Forest University.
The Demon Deacons are currently in a tie for sixth place after an opening-round 298 (+10). WFU is Oklahoma State.
Three-time defending champion Duke, (289) leads by five shots over Auburn and Purdue. Vanderbilt and Florida are six shots back at 295.
The 2002 Bryan National Medalist Virada Nirpathpongporn of Duke, along with Beth Hermes from Purdue, hold a share of the individual lead after carding two-under-par 70?s in the windy and cold conditions. Allison Hanna (Ohio State), Sarah Johnston (Furman), Brittany Lang (Duke) and Onnarin Sattayabanphot (Purdue) were the only other golfers to break par on the afternoon, posting one-under-par 71s.
Deacon freshman Mandy Goins fired a one-over 73 on Friday and sits in a tie for 11th in the individual standings, three strokes back of the leaders. Another freshman, Jessica Castle, shot a 74 and is tied for 15th overall. Junior Christine Hallstrom is 29th after an opening-round 75. Senior Deb Means recorded a 76 and sits in 39th place, while junior Ashley Hoagland is 42nd with a five-over 77.
Round two begins at 8:30 am on both #1 and #10 tees. The Demon Deacons are paired with Vanderbilt and Florida and tee off beginning at 9:18 from hole #1.
