PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - The fifth-ranked Wake Forest men's golf squad moved up one spot in the standings on the final day, finishing fourth at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, held at the par 72, 6,895-yard Sawgrass Country Club. The two-day, 54-hole event featured a prestigious field of 15 teams, nine of which are ranked among the nation's top 20.
The Demon Deacons were in fifth place after Monday's 36 holes, trailing third-place teams Clemson and Florida by three strokes. WFU shot a three-over 291 in Tuesday's final round to overtake the Gators by one stroke. Augusta State won the event with a 12-under par 852. Clemson moved up to second, finishing at -2. Texas made the biggest jump of the day, going from seventh to third with a final-round even 288, edging the Deacons by one stroke, 870 to 871.
WFU senior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) posted the team's highest finish, tying for fourth with a three-under 213 (71-68-74). Wanner finished just two strokes behind three players who tied for first at -5. Clemson's D.J. Trahan won a playoff to claim individual medalist honors.
Deacon Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) placed 12th, two strokes behind Wanner at -1 215 (73-71-71). It marked just the second time in eight events this season that Haas has finished out of the top 10.
Senior Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) recorded WFU's low round of the day, carding a two-under 70 to move up from 51st to 29th with a four-over 220 (757-75-70). Senior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) and Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) finished 42nd and 72nd, respectively at +7 and +19.
Sophomore Doug Manchester (La Jolla, Calif.), competing in his first collegiate event as an individual, had an impressive comeback in the final round. After carding an 83 and 84 on Monday, Manchester fired a one-under 71 on Tuesday, finishing at +22 238.
The Mercedes-Benz Championship wraps up three straight weeks of tournament play for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest returns to action March 10-11 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
