Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest field hockey coach Jennifer Averill has announced the signings of six recruits who will join the squad for the 2003 campaign. The six incoming freshmen add more weapons to a Demon Deacon arsenal that finished the 2002 season with a record of 20-2 and won both the ACC and NCAA Championships.
??We have some great personalities in this group,?? says Averill about her incoming class. ??They will add great depth at every position and they have tremendous talent.??
Lauren Crandall (Doylestown, Pa.): This midfielder led Central Bucks East high school to a 26-1-1 record and the Pennsylvania Class AAA State Championship, the school??s first since 1986. Serving as a team captain for the second straight year, Crandall scored 20 goals and, complemented by her superb ball distribution skills, was named Southeastern Pennsylvania field hockey player of the year by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
What Averill says about Crandall: ??Lauren is a very creative player who has tremendous vision and game sense.??
Kristina Gagliardi (Piscataway, N.J.): As a four-year starter for Piscataway High School, this goalkeeper has compiled an impressive playing resume. She has played in two National Futures Tournaments as well as two Junior Olympics and in 2001, she was chosen as a member of the Under-16 National Team. In 2000, she was the goalkeeper for the gold-medal squad at the U-16 National Futures Tournament.
What Averill says about Gagliardi: ??She is a very techinically sound goalkeeper who has good command of her defense.??
Kristi Harshman (Palmyra, Pa.): This forward has been gaining accolades since her freshman season at Palmyra High School (the same school that produced former Deacon standout Jennie Shelton). During her freshman season, Harshman helped her squad to a silver medal at the Winter Keystone State Games and participated in the National Futures Tournament and the AAU Junior Olympics. In 2000 she was chosen as a Mid-Penn conference all-star and participated in the Futures Elite Program.
What Averill says about Harshman: ??Kristi has great energy and enthusiasm, which contributes to her success as an attacker.??
Haley Scott (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.): This midfielder helped Torrey Pines high school??s squad to the Palomar League Championship in 2001, as well as the San Diego City/County Championship. That same season, she was a San Diego Union Tribune First Team All-County player. In 2002, she was a member of the San Diego Union Athlete Academic Team and the Serra All-Tournament Team. She also lettered in lacrosse and soccer and played for the soccer Olympic Development Team. She is also a member of the National Honors Society.
What Averill says about Scott: "Haley is a playmaker and a true competitor. She will bring great depth to our program."
Tracey Scott (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.): A forward for Torrey Pines, where she and twin sister Haley both played their high school hockey, Tracey Scott has put together several achievements throughout her career. She helped Torrey Pines to the San Diego City/County Championship and Palomar League Championship in 2001 and was a second team All-Palomar League selection. That same year she was a member of the San Diego Union Tribune All-County squad. In 2002, along with being her squad??s second-leading scorer, Scott was named to the San Diego Union Athlete Academic team. She also lettered in lacrosse and soccer and played for the Olympic Development Soccer Team and is a member of the National Honors society.
What Averill says about Scott: ??Tracey is a powerful forward with great intensity and spirit.??
Jamie Whitten (Maidens, Va.): A back for Richmond??s Collegiate Upper School, Whitten is expected to help bolster a Deacon defensive unit that allowed just 15 goals in 2002. She was a member of the Under-16 National Team in 2001 and has competed in two National Futures Tournaments and two Junior Olympics. She also participated in the Futures Development Invitation Camp.
What Averill says about Whitten: ??Jamie plays like a seasoned veteran. Her communication and technical skill make her a great asset to our program.??
