Winston-Salem, N.C. -- The 11th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team scored in every inning and used a 13-run fourth to bombard Albany 25-1 on Thursday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
The Deacons (7-3) got the ball rolling with single runs in the first, second and third innings but the floodgates opened up in the fourth inning with Wake Forest plated 13 runs, the third-highest single inning total in school history.
In the fourth, Wake Forest sent 17 batters to the plate. The inning included a home run by Doug Riepe, his third of the year. The Deacons also got a lot of help from the Great Danes who had four errors, three walks and two passed balls in the inning. Six of the 13 runs in the inning scored unearned.
Wake Forest didn't let up, scoring three more in the fifth and sixth innings and plated two in the seventh and tacked on the exclamation point with Jamie D'Antona's home run in the eighth inning.
Sophomore Brian Bach (2-0) got the win on the mound for five innings of work. He allowed just one run on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Kirby Wedekind, Indy Wilkinson and Kyle Young combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief with no walks.
Offensively, there were many stars for the Demon Deacons. Adam Bourassa and Ben Ingold each had four hits and scored four runs. D'Antona went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and tied a career-high with six RBI. Chris Getz homered and scored four times. Brad Scioletti, Steve LeFaivre and Steven Malinowski each had two hits.
The game also provided an opportunity for underclassmen such as Grant Achilles, Brendan Enick, Jeff Markley, Jonathan Portnoy and Casey Sterk and to see some game action. Sterk led that group with a single and a sacrifice fly.
Albany fell to 0-6 on the season and starter Mike Muller (0-1) took the loss for the Great Danes.
Wake Forest continues its homestand tomorrow as Le Moyne College invades Hooks Stadium for a three-game weekend series. First pitch on Friday is set for 2:30 p.m. and junior All-American Kyle Sleeth will pitch for the Deacons.
