Men's Golf Finishes Third at Cleveland Golf Invitational

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team turned in a six-under 282 as a team on Sunday to finish third at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, taking place at the Forest Hills Golf Club. The two-day, 54-hole event featured 17 teams competing on a par 72, 6,840-yard layout.
The Demon Deacons, who entered Sunday's final round in third place, shot under par in all three rounds of the event (276-281-282) to remain in that position with a season-low score of 839, 25 under par. Oklahoma State tied with WFU in third, while host Augusta State won the event with a 44-under 820. Second-place Clemson was two strokes back at 822.
As a team, Wake Forest has shot nine straight rounds under par.
Deacon senior Chad Wilfong led the WFU contingent for the first time all season, placing seventh individually with a career-best 206. Wilfong turned in rounds of 68-70-68 to finish with a career-best 206, 10 under par.
Wilfong trailed by seven strokes to individual champion Oliver Wilson of Augusta State, who shot a blistering 199 (68-67-64) en route to medalist honors.
Wilfong led three other Deacons who finished under par for the event. Senior Chris Yoder also had an impressive tournament, finishing tied for 11th with a season-best seven-under 209 (71-68-70). Junior Bill Haas was two strokes back in 21st with a five-under 211 (69-71-71). Haas currently owns a streak of 11 straight rounds under par spanning the last four events.
Senior Cortland Lowe, playing in his hometown, shot a 74 on Sunday to finish at two-under 214 for the event (68-72-74), tying for 37th.
Senior Brent Wanner finished five over for the tournament, placing 67th with a 223 (72-76-73).
The fourth-ranked Demon Deacons, who have finished among the top four in their last five events, return to action next weekend at The Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C.
