Bennett Selected to Texas Hall of Honor

AUSTIN, TX - Annie Schweitzer-Bennett, Wake Forest's Director of Track & Field and head women's cross country coach, is one of four former female University of Texas All-Americans and one former coach that will be inducted as members of the fourth class of the UT Women's Athletics Hall of Honor.

Schweitzer-Bennett will be honored at the 2003 Hall of Honor luncheon and ceremony on Friday, November 14 at UT's Frank Erwin Center. The five 2003 inductees were nominated this spring, and selection was conducted by the 21-member UT Women's Athletics Hall of Honor Selection Committee. The Women's Hall of Honor began a three years ago as part of a celebration of 25 years of women's athletics at The University of Texas.

A former NCAA champion and All-American in cross country and track and field from 1983-87, Bennett was one of UT's finest distance runners in the early years of the NCAA. Schweitzer-Bennett was a member of UT's first - and only - NCAA cross country team champion in 1986. She also was a member of UT's team which placed fifth in 1985 and won the Southwest Conference individual cross country title in 1985. During her illustrious track and field career, Schweitzer-Bennett won the 1987 NCAA outdoor 5,000 meters title and was second in the 1987 NCAA indoor 5,000 meter event. That same year, she was fourth individually in the 1986 NCAA outdoor 5,000 meters while helping the Longhorns win the 1986 NCAA outdoor team title. At the conference level, she was a member of the 1985, 1986 and 1987 Texas teams which won SWC indoor and outdoor track team titles and SWC cross country team crowns. She also earned the SWC outdoor 3,000 meter and 5,000 meter titles in 1985 and 1986.
