Wake Forest women's golfer Nuria Clau was selected 2003 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Women's At-Large First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.
Clau, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, adds the honor to her second team National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America selection last month.
To qualify for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in class, a starter or a significant reserve on their team and have compiled a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA.
The ACC Women's Golfer of the Year, Clau won two tournaments, finished second at the ACC Championships and broke the school record with a 72.38 stroke average this season. Leading Wake Forest to a runner-up finish at the ACC Championships, Clau and the Demon Deacons just missed the cut at the NCAA Regional Championship and came in 10th. She is currently ranked 12th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. A two-time All-America pick by the NGCA, Clau tied for second at the 2002 ACC Championships. A member of the Spanish National Team since 1997, Clau was the 1998 Spanish Amateur Champion and is a former member of Spain's World Cup Team.
A two-time All-ACC selection, Clau graduated last month with a degree in Mathematical Business. Named the 2002 Wake Forest Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, Clau is a two-time NGCA Academic All-American.
The complete Verizon Academic All-America roster will eventually be posted at cosida.com.
