Bill Haas Advances To Match Play at U.S. Amateur

OAKMONT, Pa. - Wake Forest senior Bill Haas has advanced at the 2003 U.S. Amateur Championship, taking place at Oakmont Country Club this week. Haas tied for 13th after 36 holes of the stroke play portion of the championship, carding a three-over 143. He finished five strokes back of stroke play medalist, John Holmes of Campbellsville, Ky.
The 312-member Amateur field has now been trimmed to 128 as participants will open match play competition on Wednesday.
Stroke play was contested on two courses, the Oakmont Country Club and Pittsburgh Field Club. Playing the more difficult Oakmont course on Monday, Haas opened with a four-over 74. Today, Haas carded a one-under 69. Three under going into the final hole, Haas triple-bogeyed the par-3 18th to finish with a 69.
Haas will open match play with a first-round faceoff against Jessie Mudd of Louisville, Ky. Mudd tied for 33rd with a six-over 146, including a 68 at Pittsburgh Field Club and a 78 at Oakmont.
All match play rounds will take place at Oakmont Country Club. Haas and Mudd are scheduled to tee off at 12:10 p.m.
Haas was the stroke play medalist in 2002 and advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Ricky Barnes. The winner of the U.S. Amateur receives an exemption into the 2003 U.S. Open and a possible invitation to play in the 2004 Masters Tournament, if he remains an amateur.
