Men's Tennis Wraps Up Day One At UVA Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA-- The Wake Forest men's tennis team completed the first day of action on Friday at the UVA Invitational with some impressive victories. Andrew Hamar, Derrick Spice, Todd Paul and Joe Bates each won their first two matches and will continue play on Saturday morning.
Hamar knocked off top-seeded Stephen Mitchell of Alabama in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 in his opening match. Hamar then took down VCU's Francesc Lleal, 6-4, 7-5.
Spice opened up play with a straight-set victory over Darrin Cohen of Virginia, and then beat Harvard's George Turner by a score of 6-1, 7-5. Spice and Hamar will face each other in one of Saturday's semifinal matches.
Ross, who won the division II singles title at last weekend's Southern Intercollegiate Championships, won his first match against Purdue's Troy Havens, but then fell in three sets to Virginia's Rylan Rizza, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
In the flight B singles bracket, Andrew Simpson was defeated in his first match by Jason Beren of Harvard, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Will Chewning also fell in three sets to Jack Li of Harvard, while Liron Strauss defeated Matt Simeon of NC State in round one, but was knocked out by Purdue's Jarred Leibner. Simpson and Chewning both won straight-set matches on Friday afternoon in the flight B consolation round.
Todd Paul steamrolled his way into the flight B quarterfinals, with straight set victories over Purdue's Eric Hodgman and Mike Downing of Virginia. Paul dropped just three games total in those two matches.
Also finding himself in Saturday's quarterfinals is Joe Bates who won a 7-6, 6-4 match over Purdue's David Robinson then defeated VCU's Daniel Lohff to advance.
In flight A Doubles, the team of Ross and Spice was ousted by Steven Kane and Geoffrey Russell of William and Mary by a score of 8-5 in the opening match while Hamar and Simpson advanced with an 8-6 victory over Sean Kelleher and Stephen Ward of William & Mary.
In flight B Doubles, Paul and Strauss fell 9-7 to Dillon Walker and Mark Montandon of Virginia while Bates and Chewning took an 8-4 victory over William & Mary's Colin O' Brien and Kal Patrick.
Day two action from the UVA Invitational begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
