Men's Tennis Drops Season Opener At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, MI -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Michigan on Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. With the defeat, the Deacs begin the 2004 season 0-1 while the Wolverines improve to 4-0. Michigan took the early 1-0 lead, claiming two of three doubles matches before winning five of the six matches in singles competition.
The Deacs' doubles pairing of Derrick Spice and Brett Ross dropped their match to Michigan's Anthony Jackson and Brian Hung, but Andrew Hamar and Todd Paul pulled Wake Forest back even with an 8-6 win over Michael Rubin and Ryan Heller.
In the No. 3 doubles match, Wake Forest's Joe Bates and Andrew Simpson were defeated 8-6 by Michigan's Vinny Gossain and Steve Peretz as the Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Spice was the only Demon Deacon able to pull out a win on Saturday, defeating #34 Michael Rubin, 7-5, 7-5 in the number one singles match. In the No. 2 match, Anthony Jackson knocked off #77 Hamar in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Wake Forest's Paul, Ross and Liron Strauss each dropped three-set matches while David Loewenthal suffered a 6-1, 6-3 defeat at the hands of David Anving in the No. 6 slot.
The Deacons return to action Sunday when they travel to East Lansing to face #58 Michigan State which has started the season with a 5-0 mark.
