COLLEGE PARK, MD.-- The Wake Forest volleyball team fell to Maryland in five games on Saturday in the Comcast Center Gymasium. The Demon Deacons won the first and fourth games, but Maryland came out on top thanks to a dominating 15-6 performance in game five. The Terrapins improved to 12-3 while the Deacs saw their record drop to 11-3.
Five different Wake Forest players recorded at least ten kills and setter Erin Borhart set a new career-high with 61 assists, but the Deacs hit just .192 as a team compared to Maryland's .286. The Terps also recorded 21 total blocks compared to the Deacs' eight.
The Deacs came out of the gate strong in game one, connecting on 19 kills in 45 attempts while making just six errors and hitting a solid .289. The Terps struggled a bit in the first game, and Wake Forest took advantage with a 30-25 victory.
Wake Forest's production dropped off in games two and three, with the Terrapins taking those games by scores of 30-22 and 30-23. Maryland hit over .300 in each of those games while the Demon Deacons made 23 errors combined.
With the Terps leading leading two games to one, Wake Forest rallied for a 30-25 victory in game four thanks in large part to 24 kills and just four errors. Maryland also played well in this game, but the Deacs were too much to handle.
But perhaps that fourth game took everything out of the Demon Deacons as Maryland came storming back with a 15-6 win in the decisive fifth game. The Terps looked strong, committing just one error while the Deacs hit -.105 in the game and fell to 1-1 in ACC matches.
Valerie Rydberg led Wake Forest with 17 kills and also came up with 16 digs in the match. Kim Stern and Jessic Hauff both contributed with 15 kills, Christy Williams notched 14 of her own and Natasha Schaefer recorded a match-high 19 digs.
Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Duke for a match at 7 p.m. The Deacs then hit the road for Tallahassee, and will take on Florida State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
