WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Seven of the ACC's nine schools traveled to Wake Forest's Indoor Tennis Center and began play at the ACC Indoor Championships on Friday. Four different Demon Deacons won at least one match and have advanced to Saturday's round of 16. Two Wake Forest doubles pairings also came away with victories on Friday, moving into tomorrow's quarterfinals.
In the singles draw, fifth-seeded Andrew Hamar received a first round bye before defeating Georgia Tech's Joao Menano, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Todd Paul also had a first-round bye, and advanced to the round of 16 with a straight-set victory over the Yellow Jackets' Trevor McLeod. The Deacs' Brett Ross also earned a hard-fought 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 win against NC State's Conor Taylor to advance. Joe Bates defeated NC State's Dennis Mayers in straight sets on Friday morning and gave the tournament's number one seed, UNC's Nick Monroe, a scare before falling 7-5, 1-6, 3-6 in his second match of the day.
Also in singles play, the Deacons' Will Chewning, Andrew Simpson and Liron Strauss suffered losses in their first matches and will participate in the consolation bracket beginning Saturday.
On the doubles side, Wake's fourth-seeded pairing of Derrick Spice and Ross took an 8-6 victory over Georgia Tech's Nico Gysi and Trevor McLeod while Paul and Hamar teamed up for two victories on the day. Georgia Tech's West Nott and Marko Rajevac were their first victims while Duke's Christopher Brown and Ryan Heinberg could not contain the Deacs in their round of 16 match.
