Wake Forest Postgame Quotes
January 3, 2004 / vs. New Mexico

Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser
On the game:
"I thought it was a good ball game. We got their best shot and it was a tough one for them to lose. The other team practices, it's not always about what we didn't do. They're a good basketball team but we don't have enough healthy guys practicing right now."

On being out-rebounded:
"Rebounding is disappointing, but we do start three small guys, so we get more in transition play."

On injuries:
"The dogs may bark but the caravan moves on."

On field goal shooting:
"We had good shots, but shot it poorly in the first half. We got some fastbreak baskets, which we should get with a fast, small team, like Gray, Paul and Downey. Our design is not to have every game turn into a jumpshooting contest. We've got to get some transition baskets. We don't want to be a team that lives and dies with the jump shot."

On Chris Paul's steals:
"Chris Paul has been challenged by a plethora of outstanding point guards this season, and Coach Gaudio did the scouting report well and helped Chris get those five steals. Despite his (Paul's) angelic appearance, he's a competitor on the court."

Sophomore Eric Williams
"There are things we still need to work on. There were so many things that we had to adjust to which caused us to get away from our defense. We stepped up when we needed to and made more of the shots we needed to in the second half. I was really upset in the first half and usually I get upset I don't play like I should. This is something that I've told Coach that I want to focus on for the remainder of the season."

Freshman Chris Paul
On turnovers and steals:
"Turnovers were huge. Coach says that we are best when our defense creates our offense. Our defense has been effective in turning the ball over and creating steals. Coach wants our transition game to continue to get better."

Junior Taron Downey
"We knew that they were going to play hard, but we had to come out and play our game. They played a soft man-to-man defense. It was something different than what we are used to. We played okay, but not great, and soon we will be playing our game the way we should be playing."

New Mexico Head Coach Ritchie McKay
On the game:
"I was impressed with Wake Forest. They were a nightmare to prepare for because they have such a balanced team. Hopefully we can get better and compete in our league, but they're just a great team."

On Chris Paul:
"I love Chris Paul. I think he's a phenomenal player. He might be the best guard I've seen since I've become a coach."

On Troy DeVries:
"Troy is a complete player. He does whatever he can for the team to win. He's an unselfish player who can make that extra pass."

On New Mexico's second-half dry spell:
"We thought if the game was in the 70s, we'd have a better chance of winning. That's why we weren't pushing it as much. But that also probably contributed to the dry spell."
