Wake Forest owns a lofty No. 2 national ranking -- its highest preseason ranking ever -- in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches preseason poll released earlier today. The Deacons received the most first-place votes (12) of any team, but trail Kansas for the No. 1 ranking by just 17 points.
North Carolina is ranked third and Georgia Tech fourth in the poll, giving the ACC three of the nation's top four-ranked teams. Illinois, WFU's opponent on Dec. 1 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, is ranked fifth. Syracuse, Connecticut, Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Michigan State own spots 6-10.
Other Wake Forest opponents in the top 25 include (12) Duke, (15) Texas, (16) Maryland and (19) NC State. Deacon opponents Cincinnati and Florida State received votes for the poll.
The Associated Press poll has not been released yet.
Wake Forest, 21-10 a year ago, return 11 letterwinners off of last year's team. Coach Skip Prosser's team opens exhibition play Nov. 4 against USC-Upstate at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
