DURHAM, N.C. - Erin Borhart posted her 13th double-double of the season and was one kill away from her sixth triple double of the season, despite the Wake Forest volleyball team falling to Duke, 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 20-28), Tuesday night in Durham. With one match left until the ACC tournament, the Deacs are 11-15 overall and 3-12 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils are 9-7 in the conference and 18-9 overall.
The Blue Devils opened up the first game in a commanding fashion, taking the Deacs on an early 5-0 run. An attack error and a kill by freshman Michael Faulkner put Wake Forest on the board. Despite kills by Kim Stern and Erin Borhart, another 6-1 run by Duke increased the lead and Wake was unable to overcome the deficit, dropping the first game, 30-17.
In the second game, the two teams battled point for point seven times until two kills by Duke's Tealle Hunkas gave the Blue Devils a small lead. A kill by senior Morgan Havig and another by junior Lauren Peterson brought the Deacs back in the game, tying the score at 11 all. Knotting the score four more times, the Deacs held on to the game until the 20-18 mark, but Duke won three consecutive points, giving them the lead. Kills by Stern and another by Havig helped close the gap, but the Blue Devils took the second game, 30-24.
Duke came out in the third game grabbing the first two point from kills, but Borhart nailed one down for the Deacs, followed by two more by Havig and Williams. A block assist by Williams and Stern kept the game tied between the two teams, but Wake quickly took command with a set of kills by Stern and Williams at 9-10, giving Wake its first lead of the game. Duke knotted the score again at 17 all, but when Stern and Williams both knocked down a kill and then a block together, the Deacs went up at 26-24. A pair of attack errors by both teams once again tied the score at 27 all. Three consecutive kills by the Blue Devils ended the match, 30-27.
Borhart posted her double-double with 28 assists, 14 digs and nine kills. Stern also had nine kills on the night, while Faulkner was not far behind with seven of her own. Havig had four block assists, while Klaryssa Henry had 12 digs.
Wake Forest will return to action on Saturday night in Reynolds Gym against Virginia Tech for the final home match of the season. After that, they will travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2004 ACC tournament. Match time for Saturday is set at 6 p.m.
