Winston-Salem, N.C. - Seniors Jennifer Johnson and Erin Ferrell both put up double-doubles, while Cotelia Bond-Young scored the game-high 22 points, leading the Wake Forest women's basketball team to a 76-50 victory over Loyola College, Tuesday morning in Joel Coliseum.
The Deacs enter the Christmas break with a 9-1 overall record, in addition to making the program's first AP national poll appearance since the 1987-88 season with six votes. With the loss, Loyola falls to 2-7 overall.
Ferrell earned her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards, while Johnson hit two career highs with 16 points and 11 boards, en route to her first career double-double. Also putting up impressive numbers for Wake, junior Liz Strunk had 19 points, while Bond-Young had the game-high eight assists.
Wake Forest opened the game in a dominating fashion, taking the visiting Greyhounds on a 15-2 run that was led by Strunk with a 5-0 run of her own that included a three from beyond the NBA line. Slowly earning points, Lauren Troupe hit a three for Loyola at 19-9, but the Deacs answered it with one from Bond-Young and then another from Johnson. At 28-16, Loyola fought back, going on a 11-5 run, decreasing the Deacs lead to five at the break.
Loyola came out in the second half and pushed the score within two, taking in the first three points, but a steal and a lay-up by Bond-Young that was quickly followed by a three, started Wake on a 17-2 run. From that point, the Deacs continued to forge ahead, with Bond-Young shooting for five straight points, giving Wake a 20 point lead that would ultimately lead hem to a 76-50 victory.
For Loyola, Jackie Valderas scored the team-high 10 points, while Lauren Troupe pulled down 12 rebounds. As a team, the Greyhounds shot 30.9% from the floor, including 20 points in the paint.
Wake Forest will return to the court on Dec. 28 against Alabama A&M. The game will take place in Reynolds Gym at 7 p.m.
