Demon Deacons Roll Past Old Dominion, 5-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The 42nd ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team opened up its home schedule with a decisive 5-2 victory over #75 Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons improve to 3-3 on the season while handing the Monarchs (4-1) their first defeat.
Wake Forest wasted no time jumping out to a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Derrick Spice and Brett Ross continued their hot play, defeating Izak van der Merwe and Niklas Oskarsson at No. 1, 8-6. Andrew Hamar and Todd Paul paired for an 8-4 win at No. 2 while Andrew Simpson and David Loewenthal finished off the Monarchs with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Deacs got a strong win at No. 1 from Derrick Spice who knocked off ODU's van der Merwe, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Van der Merwe entered the match ranked 13th in the nation, but the unranked Spice came back for a strong victory after dropping the first set. Todd Paul, Andrew Simpson and Joe Bates came through with straight-set victories for Wake Forest while Andrew Hamar and Brett Ross each dropped hard-fought three set matches.
The Demon Deacons return to action Friday when they host East Tennessee State at the Indoor Tennis Center.
