WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team not only moved up 16 spots in the most recent ITA National Poll, but junior singles' player Karin Coetzee climbed into the top-10. Coetzee, ranked 10th, is the first Demon Deacon to get ranked among the top-10 since Bea Bielik was ranked #1 in the final poll of the 2002 spring season.
Coetzee, who was ranked 15th to open the spring season, is 4-1 thus far, including a straight-set victory over #22 Jenny McGaffigan of Illinois. Coetzee was on her way to another victory over a top-30 player Sunday, but her match with #26 Jessica Roland of Texas A&M was suspended once the team score was decided. Coetzee had captured the opening set, 7-6 (3), and led the second set 5-1. Including this past fall, Coetzee is 18-4.
Freshman Alex Hirsch slipped from #38 in the first single's poll to #40. Hirsch, who went 7-1 this past fall, has not played this spring.
In doubles, Coetzee and senior Aimee Smith are the highest ranked Deacon duo at #15. The two were ranked 15th in the first poll of the spring season. Freshman Ashlee Davis and junior Katie Martzolf find themselves ranked #47.
The Demon Deacons return to action this Friday afternoon at #16 William & Mary. First-serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. The match will be the fourth straight for Wake Forest against a top-25 program.
