WILLAMSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team picked up its second straight victory over a ranked foe Saturday afternoon when the Deacs dominated #52 Ohio State, 5-2, in college women's tennis action from McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on the campus of William & Mary.
The Demon Deacons grabbed the crucial doubles point after sweeping each of the three matches. At No. 1, junior Karin Coetzee and junior Katie Martzolf held off Erica Fisk and Jackie Leskovar, 9-8 (6) in the tiebreaker. Coetzee and Martzolf, ranked 47th in this past week's ITA rankings, improved to 2-0 this spring.
At No. 2, freshman Ashlee Davis and junior Danielle Schwartz had an equally tough match with Meaghan Colville and Lindsay Williams. Davis and Schwartz captured a back-and-forth match, 9-7. At No. 3, sophomore Sandie Knight and senior Aimee Smith did not have nearly as much difficulty in their match with Lindsey Adams and Meredith Vincent. Knight, who was making just her second appearance this spring, and Smith were victorious, 8-4.
#10 Coetzee rebounded from her dissapointing result last night with an impressive straight set victory over #43 Williams, 6-3, 6-2. Coetzee improved to 5-2 this spring with two of those victories coming over ranked opponents.
Wake Forest then capture each of the matches at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. Davis outlasted Fisk, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (15-13) in a thriller, while Martzolf cruised past Leskovar, 6-2, 6-2 and Proctor had little trouble with Adams, 6-2, 6-1.
