Women's Tennis Drops ACC Opener at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA - Reigning ACC Player of the Week Ashlee Davis picked up a victory at No. 3 singles, but that would be all for #29 Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons lost at #43 Georgia Tech, 6-1, in women's tennis action from the outdoor courts of the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets opened the afternoon earning the doubles point. Georgia Tech captured wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kelly Anderson teamed with Sekita Grant to down the 47th-ranked duo in the country of Karin Coetzee and Katie Martzolf in the top slot, 8-2, while Maria Nieto and Lyndsay Shosho defeated Davis and Danielle Schwartz in a close 9-7 match at the No. 2 slot.
Senior Aimee Smith and Sandie Knight did defeat Kacie Anson and Stauss, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.
The Demon Deacons tied the match at 1-1 after Davis defeated Tech's Stauss, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Grant then untied the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win against the Deacs' Schwartz in the No. 6 position before Anderson came back from an 0-3 deficit in the second set of her match to down Martzolf, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.
With Wake Forest trailing, 3-1, Shosho beat 10th-ranked Coetzee by a score of 6-2, 6-3 to secure the match victory for Georgia Tech.
Earning three-set wins on the afternoon were Alison Silverio and Nieto at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles slots, respectively. Silverio won her first set 7-5, but dropped the second in a close 6-7 (5) battle to Smith, before earning the third-set tiebreaker victory, 1-0. Nieto also went to a three-set tiebreaker, as she took the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second, 5-7 to senior Liz Proctor.
The Deacs fall to 7-3 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-3.
The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday afternoon at Clemson. First-serve with the Lady Tigers is scheduled for noon.
