WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The 48th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team suffered its first conference loss of the season Sunday at the hands of #55 Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets came into Leighton Tennis Stadium on Wake Forest's campus and took a narrow 4-3 victory over the Deacs. Tech is now 6-3 overall and 1-1 in ACC play after being swept 7-0 by Duke on Saturday while the Demon Deacons fall to 4-5, 0-1 in the ACC.
The teams found themselves tied at three with the deciding match still being played in the No. 6 singles slot. Georgia Tech's Marko Rajevac took the opening set 6-4, but Wake's Andrew Simpson evened things up with a 6-3 win in set number two. With their coaches and teammates cheering them on, the two players traded games before Rajevac prevailed with a 6-4 victory in the third set to seal the victory for the Jackets.
Wake Forest's three wins in singles play came from Todd Paul at No. 3, David Loewenthal at No. 5 and Brett Ross at No. 6. With his 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Georgia Tech's Jason Pieters, Paul has now won four straight decisions and is 7-2 overall in his singles matches.
The Yellow Jackets grabbed the crucial first point to begin the day, taking two of three doubles matches from Wake Forest. At No. 1, Scott Schnugg and Rajevac edged Derrick Spice and Ross by a score of 8-6 while West Nott and Pieters cruised to an 8-3 win over Paul and Andrew Hamar at No. 2. Simpson and Loewenthal teamed up for the Deacs at No. 3 and outlasted Tech's Joao Menano and Zachary Rath, 9-8.
The Demon Deacons will return to action March 9th when they travel to New Orleans for a matchup with Tulane at 2:30 p.m.
