Deacs In Third After Opening Round of Lady Gamecock

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team is in third place after the opening round of the Lady Gamecock Invitational at The University Club. The Demon Deacons shot a 21-over 309 as a team in Friday's action.
Host South Carolina leads the 11-team field with a 10-over 298, while North Carolina is in second-place at 303, six strokes ahead of WFU.
The Deacon duo of junior Ashley Hoagland and freshman Mandy Goins are in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings after both shooting an opening-round 76 (+4). The pair sits five strokes behind individual leader Ashley Prange of North Carolina. Prange was the only golfer to shoot under par Friday, carding a one-under 71.
Wake Forest senior Deb Means is tied for 15th overall at five-over 77. Junior Christine Hallstrom is tied for 30th with an eight-over 80, while freshman Jessica Castle rounds out the Deacon lineup, currently in 53rd place with a 13-over 85.
Sophomore Julie McKenna, competing as an individual, shot an 88 on Friday and is tied for 61st.
The second round of the Lady Gamecock takes place Saturday, with the final 18 holes on Sunday.
