BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - Wake Forest tied its best finish of the season by finishing fourth at the Lady Gamecock Classic. The Deacs shot a field-low 297 (+9) in Sunday's final round to move up one spot in the standings and end the tournament with a 54-hole score of 918 (+54).
The three-day 54-hole event featured 11 teams and took place at the par 72, 5,996-yard University Club.
North Carolina maintained its lead throughout the tournament and won the event with a 41-over 905, a nine-stroke victory over host South Carolina. Texas finished third with a 916, two strokes ahead of WFU.
Wake Forest junior Ashley Hoagland and senior Deb Means posted the team's top finish as both tied for eighth place individually at 12-over par 228. It was Means' second-straight top-10 finish at this event after tying for ninth at the 2003 Lady Gamecock. Hoagland posted rounds of 76-75-77 while Means' scorecard read 77-79-72. The Deacon duo finished nine strokes back of individual medalist Ashley Prange of UNC , who led all three rounds and finished at three-over 219.
Junior Christine Hallstrom vaulted into a 16th place finish after a final-round 69. It was the field's low score of the day and in fact, the only sub-par score on Sunday as well as a new personal best for Hallstrom. She finished with a 15-over 231 for the tournament (80-82-69).
Deacon freshman Mandy Goins finished tied for 21st at 19-over 235 (76-79-80). Classmate Jessica Castle placed in a tie for 43rd at 27-over 243 (85-79-79). Sophomore Julie McKenna, competing as an individual, placed 62nd with a 46-over 262 (88-85-89).
Wake Forest returns to action March 26-28 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate in Athens, Ga.
